The Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) has produced this Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model after several months of concerted work by the LTAD Work Group at the CLA, including discussion with key members of the Canadian lacrosse community across Canada. The aim of the Lacrosse LTAD is to promote the development and continued success of our sport in Canada by creating an optimal player development pathway for our lacrosse athletes for years to come. In this light, LTAD supports the Vision and Mission of the CLA as outlined in the CLA Strategic Plan 2008-2012.

The Lacrosse LTAD is our sport specific adaptation of the generic LTAD model developed by Sport Canada and presented in the document Canadian Sport for Life (Canadian Sport Centres, 2005). LTAD is significant because it applies the most current international research in athlete development to the long term task of developing athletes for championship performance. As an additional benefit, it also promotes greater participation for athletes of all abilities and wellness for a larger segment of Canadian society, regardless of whether or not an athlete chooses to pursue an elite or professional career.

This document outlines the basic factors behind LTAD, and then it applies those factors to clearly define the stages of player development for lacrosse. From our understanding of player development, the training content and competition requirements can be defined for each stage. Using the LTAD pathway, our aim is to ensure that Canada continues to develop world class lacrosse players and teams for years to come, and thereby maintain our place as leaders in the sport while promoting ever-growing participation and wellness for Canadians.

The Okotoks Mustangs are pleased to announce that we will hosting the Girls Rock Tournament once again!  Since the response to our all girls tournament continues to be overwhelmingly positive, we will bring the girls’ teams back together for a third time. It is slowly becoming one of Canada’s largest girls tournaments and we will be hosting it on May 18^th to 20^th 2012 at Calgary’s Subway  Soccer Centre. Four floors on artificial turf all in one building!

This year plans to be another great event and we can promise a weekend full of great lacrosse, excitement, and activities for everyone.  The tournament will be open to all Novice, Peewee, Bantam, and Midget girls teams.  If you are interested in signing up for our tournament, please send us an e-mail asap as spots are limited, and we will forward you the registration package as soon as it is ready.  We have block booked rooms at all of our sponsor hotels and that information will also be included in the package.

Alberta Lacrosse Association Provincial Championship Update

The Alberta Lacrosse Association is pleased to announce that the Provincial Championships have been woven into the regular season of play. This means the lacrosse season will now end in mid‐July rather than at the end of June.

A provincial committee, consisting of members from all Local Governing Bodies (CDLA, SALA, GELC, CALL and Wheatland) has been working diligently to restructure the provincial’s tournament from an intent based competition to a true Provincial Championship representative of the Province.

This year the A and C Provincial Championships will take place July 6‐8, 2012 with a location to be announced. The teams that are expected to attend each Provincial Championship will be the first place league champions from the CDLA and GELC league. Host clubs/host Local Governing Bodies (LGB’s) will have a team representing them at the Provincial Championship. In addition, the second place team from outside the host LGB will be expected to participate to round out the competition. Areas who do not have an A or C league will be allowed to enter, providing they qualify and are approved by the VP of Provincial and National Competition.

In the past, the B provincial competition has been as two separate events. The B Provincial Championships will now be combined into one event. The B Provincial Championship will be held July 13‐15, 2012 with a location to be announced. The teams expected to attend each Provincial Championship will be the first place league champions from each LGB (CDLA, GELC, CALL, SALA, and Wheatland). Host clubs and/or host Local Governing Bodies (LGB’s) will have a team representing them at the Provincial Championship. In addition, the second place team from outside the host LGB will be expected to participate to round out the competition.

The Alberta Lacrosse Association Provincial Championships are moving to a new format where there will be exciting competition. All Provincial Championship begin Friday morning and end with medal games on Sunday afternoon.
